MAY 14, 2026 (Provincetown, MA) – Today, the Provincetown International Film Festival (PIFF) announced that the Next Wave Award will be given to Jane Schoenbrun and Hannah Einbinder. The honor recognizes those who have exciting and distinctive voices, take artistic risks, and have a passionate commitment to independent film.
Jane Schoenbrun is a filmmaker, writer and curator whose films include I SAW THE TV GLOW, the experimental documentary A SELF-INDUCED HALLUCINATION and WE’RE ALL GOING TO THE WORLD’S FAIR, which played at PIFF in 2021. I SAW THE TV GLOW was nominated for six Independent Spirit Awards and three Gotham Awards. They are next set to write, direct and Executive Produce the acclaimed graphic novel Black Hole as a TV Series for Netflix with Plan B and New Regency.
Hannah Einbinder is an Emmy-winning actress and comedian best known for her breakout role opposite Jean Smart in the acclaimed HBO Max series Hacks, for which she’s also earned a Critics Choice Award and multiple Golden Globe nominations. In 2024, she debuted her comedy special Everything Must Go and is next set to appear in SEEKERS OF INFINITE LOVE alongside Justin Theroux.
Schoenbrun and Einbinder will receive the award on Friday, June 12th at Crown & Anchor in conversation. “Jane Schoenbrun and Hannah Einbinder remind us that fearless storytelling and honest artistry can reshape culture,” said Festival Executive Director Anne Hubbell. “Bold, original, and challenging, they represent the future of film.”
The duo will be in town to present their new film TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA, which will play Thursday, June 11, following its world premiere as the Opening Film in Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival. Starring Gillian Anderson, Hannah Einbinder, Eva Victor, Sarah Sherman and Jack Haven, TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA follows filmmaker Kris (Hannah Einbinder) who has been tasked with directing a film reboot of the popular “Camp Miasma” horror films, a fictional slasher franchise inspired by the hyper-sexualized—and often transphobic—horror films of Schoenbrun’s youth. MUBI will open the film on August 7th.
PIFF also announced that writer/director Matt Johnson and actor Dominic Sessa will be in conversation to introduce TONY, a nostalgic and electric depiction of a pivotal Provincetown summer that changed the course of Anthony Bourdain’s life. Set during the summer of 1975, Sessa stars as a 19-year-old Bourdain who travels to Provincetown and stumbles into the chaotic world of a restaurant kitchen. The conversation will feature an exclusive first look at TONY, set to land in theatres this August, with the coastal enclave’s bohemian energy and grit setting the stage for this coming-of-age tale. This conversation will take place on Friday, June 12th.
The festival will also welcome back Marco Calvani for a conversation following a screen the final episode from Season 2 of Netflix’s smash hit THE FOUR SEASONS on Sunday, June 14. From co-creators Tina Fey, Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield, the series follows a group of friends played by Calvani, Fey, Colman Domingo, Will Forte, Kerri Kenney-Silver and Steve Carrell as they navigate loss through 4 vacations over the course of a year. The second season will premiere on Netflix later this month. Calvani was last at PIFF in 2024 screening HIGH TIDE, the Provincetown based feature he wrote and directed.
Additionally, the festival shared details on two free filmmaker panels. Sport as Story: The New Brand Narrative which will follow a screening of offbeat short comedy SKI DOGS, where panelists will deep dive into how sports storytelling and branded content are converging, with a closer look at recent collaborations between major brands and athletes that are shaping a new kind of cinematic language. The short film and the conversation will highlight the opportunities that arise when brands expand into sports storytelling. The panel will include an Olympic skier, J. Crew Chief Revenue/Philanthropic Officer, Trisha Worthington and writer/director Kevin Ulrich. The event is sponsored by J. Crew.
Out in Hollywood: LGBTQ+ Directors on Power, Visibility, and the Stories That Get Told will be a candid conversation between LGBTQ+ directors on what they have learned building careers in Hollywood, moving between queer and non-queer stories, leading creative teams, finding the right collaborators, and shaping the future of who gets to stand behind the camera. Panelists will include John Krokidas (KILL YOUR DARLINGS, STAR) and Jason Moore (PITCH PERFECT, SHOTGUN WEDDING).
